What income protection products does Cirencester offer?
Cirencester Friendly’s main income protection insurance product is one called My Earnings Protected. The key features of these policies are as follows:
-
How much cover it offers: Up to 65% of your salary (own occupation cover).
-
How long it covers for: Both long and short term income protection cover is available, with short term policies starting at two years in length.
-
Deferred periods: A range of deferred periods are available, spanning 1-52 weeks, and including split deferred, which offers two levels of coverage during the term.
-
Premiums: Will depend on individual circumstances and which policy options you choose, but Cirencester does not increase its premiums for most higher risk occupations, smokers and those who take part in hazardous pursuits.
-
Who qualifies for it: You will be eligible for My Earnings Protected if you are employed or self-employed earning at least £6,400 per year and working 16 hours or more per week. Those on zero hour contracts will not qualify for cover.
Cirencester also offers an enhanced form of income protection called Income Assured Enhanced, which includes an investment-backed element that allows policyholders to share in the society’s profits. We are unable to advise on this particular product.
Optional extras
Cirencester Friendly Society customers can add a range of optional extras to their income protection insurance for an additional cost. These policy add-ons include:
1. Fracture & hospitalisation benefit: Provides a lump sum payment of £1,500 if the policyholder fractures a major bone (fingers, toes and nose not included), or a £50 payment per night for overnight hospital stays. It costs an extra £6 per month.
2. Immediate death benefit: Pays out a lump sum of £7,500 upon the policyholder’s death for an extra £5 per month. Ends on your 70th birthday or retirement age.
Both extras can be added on together for a combined cost of £11 per month.
Policy exclusions
Income protection policies with Cirencester have the following exclusions:
-
Motorsports: Accidents or injury related to this hobby/profession are not covered and Cirencester may increase your premium if you take part in it.
-
Sick pay: If you continue to receive any kind of income while absent from work, it can affect the amount your policy pays or or make you ineligible for a claim.
-
Burns and scalds: First degree burns are not covered.
-
Cosmetic surgery: Any operations that are not medically necessary, such as cosmetic surgery, will not be covered by a Cirencester policy.
-
Substance or alcohol abuse: Illness or injury as a result of alcohol or substance abuse will not be covered by your policy.
-
Pregnancy and childbirth: Your policy will not pay out for this unless there are complications that result in you contracting an illness or injury.
-
Sterilisation: Will only be covered if it’s being done because of medical necessity.
-
Criminal conduct: If you come to harm as a result of being involved in criminal activity, Cirencester will not approve you for a payout.
It’s also worth noting that income protection insurance policies, in general, won’t pay out for self-inflicted injuries or if you gave false information during the application process.
