Product information
Aviva are a market-leading life insurance brand in the UK. Here is the key information you need to know about the types of life cover they currently offer:
Life insurance
Aviva’s standard life insurance policies work in the same way as other mainstream providers’ products, paying out a lump sum to the policyholder’s beneficiaries when they pass away.
Here is everything you need to know about Aviva life insurance:
-
Term types: Level and decreasing term policies are available. Protection against inflation is optional for level term agreements.
-
Age restrictions: This type of insurance is available for those aged 18-77.
-
Maximum cover: Offers life cover for up to £5 million.
-
Term lengths: Can be taken out with a term length of between 1 and 50 years, or until the policyholder turns 90 years old.
-
Terminal illness cover: Is included and will pay out if the policyholder is diagnosed with an incurable illness that gives them a life expectancy of 12 months or less.
The insurer’s standard life cover is available for solo applicants or on a joint basis for two people. However, joint policies will only pay out for the first applicant who passes away.
If you separate from your partner during the term of a joint policy, Aviva will give you the option to divide the plan into two solo policies.
Over 50s life insurance
Aviva’s over 50s life insurance is available to applicants from this age and up, and pays out a guaranteed lump sum when they die, regardless of when that happens to be.
Here is the key information about this type of protection:
-
Term types: Only available as a level term policy.
-
Age restrictions: Available from age 50.
-
Maximum cover: The maximum payout can vary, with premiums costing anywhere between £5 and £100 per month.
-
Term lengths: Covers you for the rest of your life, from aged 50 onwards.
-
Terminal illness cover: Is not included with this type of coverage.
Over 50s life insurance is limited to solo applicants. You do not need to undergo a medical as the payout is guaranteed, although it will only be an amount equal to the premiums you have paid if you die during the first 12 months and it isn’t an accidental death.
Life insurance and critical illness cover
Aviva will give you the option to buy critical illness cover (CiC) alongside a life insurance plan, but does not sell them as a combined policy. This means that making a critical illness claim will not affect your life policy, which should still pay out the full amount when you die.
CiC pays out a lump sum if the person covered is diagnosed with, or has to undergo surgery for, one of 52 serious illnesses listed in Aviva’s terms and conditions.
Extras and exclusions
Your life insurance policy will not pay out if you:
-
Stop paying your premiums
-
Die outside of the specified term
-
Die as a result of suicide or self-inflicted injury in the first 12 months
-
Provided false information during the application process
When you take out life insurance with Aviva, the policy will come with bonus perks including access to the firm’s Aviva DigiCare+ app, a complementary service that provides an annual health check, mental health support, and access to personal nutritionists.
Aviva also gives you the option of taking out Free Parent Life Cover alongside any life policy you take out with them, offering £15,000 of cover per parent, for each child.
How much does it cost?
The exact amount an Aviva life insurance policy will cost depends on the premium they decide to charge you. Their premiums start at £5 per month but the exact amount you are billed will depend on a wide range of factors, including your age, general health, lifestyle, the type of policy you are taking out, and the amount you’re insured for.
What kind of reviews does Aviva have for its life insurance?
Aviva has an average rating of 4.3/5 on consumer review platform TrustPilot, indicating ‘excellent’ reviews. However, this is based on feedback from users (more than 43,000 of them) of all of its products and services - not just their life insurance offering.
